Every day a surprise.

4/11/14
I guess the horses are racing at home and every one has joined one sweep or another. Melbourne cup day will always remind me of my late friend Dot who always organised a sweep at the practice.

But the day has got off to a good start here too. We slept last night in a parking area at the top of a mountain, with views to the ocean on one side and over Niigata on the other. The only problem was that this appears to be a favourite spot for the young men with very noisy cars! However most of the night was quiet.

In the morning after our usual cup of tea, and the usual showing of the vehicle to the interested crowd that gathered (this group included a 85 year old lady who tried desperately to tell me something which I failed to grasp. But never mind - there was a lot of laughter - probably at my expense and a good time was had by the whole crowd) we drove on about 100m. Here we saw a tower which turned out to be a revolving viewing tower.

The view from the top was spectacular and well worth seeing. We stayed up there for breakfast and then travelled on. This time we went a couple of kms and came across these hang gliders. Joe has always wanted to hang glide so of course we stopped to watch. It turned out that this was a group of "mature" hang gliders, all of them over 60 yrs old, and one was 69.

So you see it's not over yet! There is plenty of life left in us over 60s!

We stopped at a jetty which appeared to have no purpose, until we got to the end of it. Here there were hundreds of chains and padlocks, with people's names on them. These were to symbolise everlasting love. Now isn't that cute?

There was also this cute little statue overlooking everything.

Continuing on southwards along the coast I caught a glimpse of the ocean through the windows of a small seaside coffee shop. We decided to stop for a coffee and view of the ocean. It turned out be one of the nicest little coffee shops we have come across in Japan!

It is on the coast near Niigata. If you go there please mention us. The owner is lovelly and she speaks some English.

We set up camp on a disused parking lot of a defunct brewery. We had a campfire  and a very clear still night, with sunshine in the morning. So all in all it was a surprising and greatly enjoyed day.
