Atlantic Coast road - the most beautiful coastline in the world?

15 June 2015
Today we are driving the Atlantic Coast road, one of Norway's designated tourist routes. This road was described as "the most beautiful coastline drive in the world", so we are full of expectations. The road crosses a number of islands linked by tunnels and bridges. But it is an awful, raining and cloudy day. We are becoming a bit tired of this weather.

This coastline is very treacherous and shipwrecks have occurred here over the years. There can be fierce Atlantic Ocean weather events here.

At one point during a rain squall we spotted this dive boat waiting for his divers. They eventually emerged in their dry suits. We were cold on the shore, and I personally would not be in the water here if you paid me. But then I gues this is summer for Norway's divers!

The high point (in more ways than one) of the drive was one particular bridge.

Over all our impression of the best coastal route in the world was that someone was dreaming. We can think of a number of more beautiful and spectacular coastal routes that we would rate higher than this one. But it was indeed beautiful, and dramatically bleak. It is certainly worth doing, however I think the writer who made that famous description did not do this area any good. The raised expectations result in disappointment (IMHO).

The road ends at Kristiansund, a port servicing the North Sea oil industry. This was evident as soon as we came into view of the city.

It appears that rigs are brought into this harbour for repairs.

The harbour us perfectly situated for such work, with deep and sheltered waters. You can see why from this map...

The harbour us sheltered from all directions.

This was also in Kristiansund.

Tomorrow we are off northwards to Trondheim!
