Croatia

30 March 2016
Croatia - renowned for its coastal scenery and it is certainly beautiful.

One of the iconic views of this coastline is the of Dubrovnic, the ancient walled city that was so mercilessly shelled by the Serbs during the 1990s. Thousands of shells were rained on the city. There has been a lot of restoration and thankfully the city remains in all of its ancient glory.

The old streets are still lined with shops, and the town square still has resturaunts.

You can walk the city walls and see how they protected the city, and see the draw bridge which was raised every night and locked and the keys handed to the king.

Further northwards we see more stunning views....

And come to the city of Split, with its old Roman city.

We've found that most of the auto camp sites have not yet opened for the season, which doesn't start for a couple of weeks yet. They have started cleaning them up, doing repairs, and so the gates are open. We have found we can drive in and they will let us stay, usually saying we are their first customers for the season. And we can take our pick of sites.

Tonight we are right on the waterfront, but the owners are nowhere to be seen. We assume that they will find us in the morning and we will pay then.

The highlight of Northern Croatia is the Plitvice National Park. We spent two half days walking it's trails, around waterfalls, and cascades.

Tonight we are camping on an island (Krk Island). These islands are famous for tourists but we really haven't experienced them to date. We are here because the nearest camping sites were here, but neither of them is open! So we have found a parking lot on the beach.

Here we met a young couple, Alexander and Antonia, who noticed our vehicle. It turned out that Alexander is a dual citizen of Croatia and Australia! Antonia had a fist full of wild asparagus shoots for which she had foraged around the beach hinterland. She kindly showed us the plant and gave us some of what she had found, to add to our dinner. They may come to Australia some day but for now they love this island.
