More in Italy

26 April 2016
Today we found a vegan B&B! I finally managed to get Sally to download Happy Cow (she has a phone sim) and there was Casale Hortensiae, only a few Km away!

So we arrived without notice (which I do not recommend). In retrospect it was a little rude! But Elisabeth took it quite gracefully and managed to produce a three course meal in very little time! We had a salad with a tahini based dressing followed by asparagus soup and finally spaghetti with artichoke hearts, all from her garden!

And this was all served in her beautiful kitchen in a country farmhouse, with a fireplace, and farm animals around - a cat (with kittens), donkeys and a dog.

Also at the dinner table were two WOOFers (Willing Workers on Organic Farms), Charlotte and Coralie.  This is a worldwide movement whereby the young people work for board and lodgings on organic farms.

I'll be looking for more vegan B&Bs now!

Next stop Lago de  Bolsena  where we had a waterfront position and great views.

An Etruscan necropolis (sounds awful?) was a must see with tombs and artwork dating to the 3rd to 7th century BC!

The coast west of Rome is not the greatest jewel in Italy's crown. In fact the beaches are quite uninspiring for Australians!

But these small platforms over the water were interesting. We think they must be for picnics. But they must be only viable where the water  is calm.

28 April, Sally has left us now. We saw her off at the airport back to Australia. She now has many more places to consider in her quest to buy a house in Italy.

In fact Italy has much more to offer than any of us realised, and we have decided to spend more time here. We had intended to go to UK this trip but will now spend most of it in Italy.

This is how we fill Matilda with water in Italy. There are these water fountains everywhere with water from underground springs. We attach the hose as best we can and use the vehicle's pump to help the pressure. It works very well and the water is sweet.

Tomorrow we will have Matilda serviced so it will be a quiet day.

29 th April 2016. We had Matilda serviced without any problems and continued on up into the Appenines again. I just cannot help myself photographing these hill-top towns. They are so picturesque!

These mountains are as spectacular as they were further north. We found a lovely camping area nestled in a valley, and settled in for the predicted minus 4 degrees with frost. It is snowing in some places higher than here.

But alas the frost turned into rain!

And we saw this fellow near the road -this one is for Sally -you left too soon!

30 April 2016
We are on the east coast of Italy on the Costa Verde.

The beaches however are not what we are used to, but make a nice change from the mountains.
