The northern coast of a Hokkaido

4/6/14
We reached the tip of Japan! That is an achievement!

Nira couldn't be persuaded to get out of the car -because of a freezing wind straight from Siberia! Also at the monument was an Irishman who has bicycled from Southern Hokkaido. He was also having photos taken and receiving congratulations. While we there this man broke into song on the monument. It was a very different sound, possibly from an indigenous culture. He later told us he had come from Okinawa!

From the hill behind the monument we could see (very faintly) the Sakhalin Islands, annexed by Russia in the last days of WW2, and still considered to be part of Japan by the Japanese.

Also on this hill are a number of monuments to peace.

These two are in memory of Japanese ships and American submarine Yahoo which were sunk on the Soya Straight during the war, and expressing the hope for lasting peace between the two countries.

This bell was made from a coin given by each member country of the UN, and is called the "Bell for the future of our Children" .

This is also from melted coins from many countries, and is called "The Bell for World Peace". The idea is that one rings the bell (once) and contemplates the relevant issues. They have installed such bells in many places and are hoping to start a bell movement. Nice sentiment eh?

This one seems to be a stylised heron (national symbol) which brings good luck.

We camped in Hamitumatsu, a camp ground on a lake, cost ~$2 per person! It had toilets, dish washing facilities, a shop.

The boys in their new dapper hats!

The view from the camp site!

Also nearby we found this foot onsen!

You wouldn't believe how nice it is to have your feet in hot water when the air is cool.

 Beautifully perfumed flowers,

And the wildflowers are starting!  As we continue around the coast tomorrow we are hoping to see more wildflowers.
