High country.

N8th June 2015
It was raining when we left Flam. The high road was closed so, much to Joe's displeasure, we had to take the tunnel. He hates these tunnels because there is no scenery. And this is the mother of all tunnels - the longest road tunnel in the world! 25km and a km underground. The road is so long and boring that they have coloured lighting to wake the drivers up, and rest areas along the way.

Believe it or not we felt a little overwhelmed by the fjords (is this a bad sign, so earlier on our tour of the land of Fjords?) so we welcomed a little mountain scenery. And we sure did get it.

We soon found ourselves on the highest highway in Norway, with huge snow walls like nothing we had seen before.

It was snowing and blowing a gale, so we stopped for coffee...

On this high road (1340m) we came across a ski lodge where the Nowegan cross country and biathlon teams were on a training camp, and testing out new skis for the next season.

Camp that night was cool but very pretty, on a river, among the pine trees. We could even have a small fire.

It seems strange to have a camp fire in daylight, but we think it doesn't actually get fully dark at all at the moment. It is certainly not fully dark before midnight, and at 2.30 am we have awoken and found it quite light. But we can't stay awake to test that theory....

Next day, more mountain scenery.

This is the lichen that the reindeer feed. It is so abundant that the forest floor is white!
