National Tourist Routes

10 th June 2015
Norway has a number of "National Tourist Routes", which are scenic drives through spectacular landscapes. They have added to the driving experience by building remarkably designed lookouts and rest areas. Some of these are quite spectacular and certainly do enhance the experience of the landscape. In some of the best places there also coffee shops or resturaunts.

It has struck us that these places are somewhat like secular cathedrals - places of awe and inspiration, to marvel at the works of nature, assisted by the works of talented people. That's my kind of cathedral!

Take a look at the road we climbed to get to this one! Yes those are motorhomes below!

And up here....the road continues.

We have arrived at Geiranger Fjord, known as "The King of Fjords" on a rainy day. There are lots of moody, cloud covered vistas.

This (below) is Tafjord (a branch of Geiranger Fjord) the area where a 400m slab of mountainside slid into the fjord, in 1934, killing 40 people with a 64m tidal wave!

Now there are monitoring stations with alarms, and escape routes in case it ever happens again. We have speculated about what it would be like to be caught in one of the road tunnels around here, should the alarms go off.........

We are exploring some of the small roads around the fjord today, hoping the weather will clear for a cruise tomorrow. There are many suitable places to camp and we are spoiled for choice.

We finally chose this place (below) at the end of a road (so no passing traffic), and totally secluded.

And finally, this is our track recently.
