Oslo to Bergen

It 5th June. We have arrived in Bergen. Today is a brilliantly sunny day, after five days of rain and wind. We were starting to think that Norway is always windy!

These are old restored buildings, lofts. They were used for food and grain storage, but there are plenty of them still around. And the sod roofs are everywhere! Delightful - some have flowers, some just mosses.

In some tourist areas the councils have required all new houses (mostly holiday huts) to have sod roofs. They look great some the residents complain that they are not great roofs - they always leak somewhere!

And the scenery!

We met a couple of workers in this snowy area. They were electrical linesmen, and off to work to fix a line downed by the recent stormy weather...

There is still snow on the mountains, and in fact it is still snowing occasionally. Some roads are still closed by snow. But in the main the melt is well underway. Some roads are closed by avalanches caused by melting snow, bringing down rocky slopes and trees. There are water falls everywhere!

Bergen is quite a pretty city but we didn't stay. It is also the gateway to some of the best Fjords, which, naturally, we were anxious to see. But this floating bridge caught my eye. It is floating on pontoons, which are laterally stabilised. This is because the fjords are so deep that they can't use pylons!

The old port area of Bergen.

And yes it is troll country!

So we are off, with great anticipation, to the first of the "real Fjords"!
